Course Description

In Intermediate 5, a functional approach is used to emphasize communication skills in daily life and beyond. Instruction focuses on various situations, including relationships, education, part-time jobs, and the impact of the Internet. Chinese culture forms another major part of this course, with a focus on the traditional Chinese festivals and Chinese Geography. Students are engaged in motivating activities that develop their ability to use Chinese in authentic contexts. The course focuses on self-expression through creative thinking, speaking, and writing. A variety of exercises and activities are based on common situations, helping students build proficiency in interpretation, interaction, and presentation.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of Intermediate 5, students should be able to:

  • Discuss how communication practices now differ from those in the past and how they affect our lives.
  • Comment on teenage relationships.
  • Extend use of language as a tool for enhancing cultural awareness.
  • Read materials written for students beginning their second year in an American college program.
  • Be proficient in the use of Chinese input in computer applications.
  • Introduce the origin, practice and product of traditional Chinese festivals, and to make comparisons.
